The TAP Uganda team recently had the opportunity to visit the Spouts of Water office and factory in Kampala, Uganda. This visit provided a comprehensive tour of their operations, along with hands-on training on how to utilize Spouts' innovative "Purifaaya" ceramic water filters. The collaboration is part of TAP’s ongoing efforts to bring sustainable clean water solutions to schools and communities in Uganda.

Spouts of Water

A Game-Changer in Clean Water Solutions

Founded in 2011, Spouts of Water has been a game-changer in Uganda’s clean water industry. Originally established in the Kumi district, the company relocated to Kampala in 2015. One remarkable aspect of Spouts is its predominantly female workforce—a rarity in corporate Uganda, highlighting the organization’s commitment to gender diversity.

During the TAP team’s visit, they were warmly welcomed by two key administrators, Ms. Doreen and Ms. Stellah. Our interaction with Ms. Doreen and Ms. Stellah left us deeply impressed by their leadership qualities, commitment, and expertise in the field of water management. Doreen's attention to detail and strategic thinking were evident throughout our conversation, while Ms. Stellah's visionary approach to sustainability initiatives showcased the organization's forward-thinking mindset. It was clear that both administrators were instrumental in driving Spouts of Water toward achieving its mission of promoting water conservation and environmental stewardship.

Gender Diversity and Spouts' Mission

Spouts of Water is dedicated to providing affordable and sustainable water filtration solutions. With an annual production of over 60,000 filters for Uganda and 55,000 for Rwanda, the organization’s impact is significant, ensuring access to clean water for thousands of families. Spouts’ emphasis on gender diversity, with women making up the majority of its workforce, further enhances its role as a pioneer in social and environmental change.

The highlight of the visit was the hands-on training session where the TAP Uganda team learned how to use and maintain the Purifaaya ceramic filters. These filters, made from clay, are designed to remove 99.99% of bacteria and other impurities from water, making it safe for consumption. Their simplicity and effectiveness make them an ideal solution for schools and communities.

Isaac and Moses from Spouts of Water shared their experience during the training session. I (Elijah) was amazed at how simple and effective ceramic filters are.

The hands-on training really helped me understand how to use them in schools, individual, and communal levels. I can't wait to implement them in the schools that we are working with to ensure WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) in schools are implemented into their daily lives and provide clean water for our students.

Making Clean Water a Reality for Ugandan Schools

Equipped with the knowledge gained from the training, the TAP WRDC Team in Uganda is now prepared to implement the Purifaaya filters in schools. Clean water is essential for students’ health and well-being, and these filters offer a sustainable way to improve water quality. Spouts of Water also promised to provide support during the TAP team’s first installation, ensuring a smooth process from setup to maintenance.

The Transformative Power of Clean Water

This visit to Spouts of Water underscored the transformative power that clean water can have in schools and communities. As one participant expressed,

"Water is life, and clean water is key to a healthy future for our students. Let’s work together to make clean water a reality in every school."

Through this partnership with Spouts of Water, TAP is one step closer to achieving its goal of bringing sustainable clean water solutions to schools, ensuring a brighter and healthier future for students across the country.
